The 17th CMS Induction Course took place from February 5th-7th 2025 at CERN. This was the first time I was involved with the course, and I was delighted to see the engagement and interest from the CMS newcomers. I prepared a hands-on trigger exercise, based on Artur Lobanov’s CMS DAS trigger exercise and ML@L1T tutorial. Based around designing selections for the VBF H → 𝜏𝜏 process, students got experience with the types of performance criteria we look at in the trigger (turn-on curves, efficiency vs rate ROCs). In the end they trained BDTs with ydf to separate the signal from Minimum Bias background, getting a first glimpse at how Machine Learning can enhance trigger selections.
